Who is Sher Bahadur Deuba: From student politics to Prime Minister for the fifth time

Nepali Congress President and parliamentary party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba have been appointed Prime Minister for the fifth time.

Deuba, who started his political journey from student politics, is one of the few people to become the Prime Minister of Nepal many times.

Deuba, who has been accused by critics of 'taking democracy to court' in his political career, is not considered by many to be a 'capable' prime minister based on his previous tenure.

However, Deuba's fans portray him as a man who has 'managed to manage the party and the coalition.'

According to many Congressmen, Deuba appears to be 'more outspoken than a diplomat' in some situations.

Deuba in the era of democracy

When Deuba was the Prime Minister in 1952 BS, Baburam Bhattarai and others had submitted a 40-point demand and the Maoists had started an armed insurgency in the country on March 20 of the same year.

Deuba, who was elected from Dadeldhura in 2056 BS, became the Prime Minister for the second time in 2058 BS.

On 18 September of the same year, King Gyanendra removed him.

Five parties agitated against Gyanendra's move.

Then, in May 2061, King Gyanendra reinstated Deuba as Prime Minister.

But again, Gyanendra took power in his own hands-on January 3, 2006, and removed Deuba.

Deuba was then charged with corruption by a royal commission set up by the king.

Deuba, who refused to testify against the commission as illegal, was arrested by the royal government on corruption charges.

However, he was later released after the Supreme Court dismissed the commission.

Party split

Due to the conflict with Girija Prasad Koirala, he split the Nepali Congress into 2059 BS and formed the Nepali Congress (Democratic), and became its president.

After the Jana Andolan of 2062 BS, Deuba's party reunited with the Nepali Congress in 2064 BS.

Deuba became the Prime Minister for the fourth time in 2074 BS after the establishment of the republic in Nepal.

During his time, the first general election after the implementation of the new constitution was held in Nepal.

Deuba, who was elected president of the Nepali Congress from the 13-party general convention held in February 2072 BS, was the leader of the main opposition party in the House of Representatives.

Deuba, who was also the vice-president of the Socialist International from 2008 to 2012, holds a master's degree in political science and a law degree from Tribhuvan University.

From 1989 to 1990, he was a Research Fellow in Political Science at the London School of Economics.

He is an MP from the Dadeldhura district in the current House of Representatives.
