Kathmandu: Chairman of the National Examination Board, Mahashram Sharma, has informed BBC that the results of the annual board examination of class 12, which was held from the 16th of May, will be announced around the 15th of August.
He said that in this year's results, even if the students get the exam results according to the letter grading as in the past, there will also be non-grading, and if that happens, the rule has been applied that the students will have to retake the exam.
What is non-grading?
Letter grading is the system in which results are given by classifying grades such as A plus, A, B, C, and D after getting a certain percentage of marks in the examination.
“But any subject with less than 35% marks will not be graded and will be non-grading. Students who get non-grading will have to take the board exam again,” said Sharma.
There was no 'cut-off' point in earlier class 12 exams. But the officials said that a new syllabus has been implemented in class 12 this year and the grading system has also been changed accordingly.“An NG or non-graded score below D is given. Non-graded students do not get academic certificates,” he said.
Classification of points
90 percent and above – A Plus (Best) 80-89.9 percent – A (Excellent) 70-79.9 percent – B Plus (Excellent)
60-69.9 percent – B (Excellent) 50-59.9 Percentage – C Plus (Satisfactory) 40-49.9 Percent – C (Acceptable) 35-39.9 Percent – D (Basic)
Less than 35 – NG (Unclassified) What to do if you get a non-graded score? This year 4 lakh 10 thousand students participated in the class 12 board exam.
According to the Controller of Examinations Krishna Sharma, if two of those examinees fail in two subjects, the chance examination for grade enhancement will be given this year.
"One and a half months after the result of the examination, such an opportunity can be given. If you get NG in at least one of the opportunity exams, then only one subject can be given in the next year's annual exam. Even then, if NG comes again, the entire subject should be examined next year," he said.
He said that NG should be understood as failure. It was not customary to give NG before. Instead, E grade was given. Dhananjay Sharma, an expert in school education, does not consider the new rule to be a cure.
He thinks that in the past, the same rule was not going to be introduced in SEE, but seeing that it would affect many people, the board backed away. But he said that it would not be reasonable to bring the same rule again in class 12.
"It is said that due to covid, children's education and learning has decreased. It is not right to make them fail as NG when there is a mentality among children and parents that they will not fail again," he said.Due to the epidemic last year too, there was pressure to complete the course in many schools.
However, he said that this decision will have a negative impact on the psychology of children, saying that it is not necessary to make them fail because those who get low grades will not be admitted to higher classes.
